207/366: Too young and uninformed.
Positive pregnancy test at only 11 years of age. She did not know she was pregnant. She had no idea that missed menses, gradual abdominal enlargement and feeling something move inside her all point to pregnancy. This is why we need to educate the youth about sex, pregnancy and reproductive health. (11.24.11)

Please reblog this. This is an actual experience from PGH.

Also, 18/F, pregnant for the second time; her partner, twice her age. Had an induced abortion at 16; at that time, her partner was thrice her age. When asked what age she was when she first had sex, she couldn’t answer. Not because she couldn’t remember, or was ashamed, but because she didn’t know what sex is.

THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE
Sacred Heart Hospital – in Eau Claire, Wisc. – is the first hospital in the country to use a a specialized neurosurgical suite providing state-of-the-art treatment for neurosurgery, spine and trauma patients. It is also the first hospital of its size to have a BrainSUITE® with the IMRIS iMRI (intra-operative magnetic resonance imaging) operating suite and eventually the iCT (intra-operative computed tomography) operating suite. And Sacred Heart is one of only 17 hospitals in the world to offer this technology configuration for patients.
A configuration of advanced imagery and mapping technology, the Smart OR helps neurosurgeons perform complex brain, spine and trauma procedures in a more effective way.“Imagine navigating a tightrope blindfolded. If you deviate off the path, even slightly, you fall. In surgery, the Smart OR is the ultimate tool ensuring that we don’t ‘fall,’” Kamal Thapar, MD says. “The technology goes beyond what the human eye can see, removing that blindfold. It provides real-time, high definition data, allowing us to chart an exact path to tumors during operations – so surrounding, healthy tissue is not damaged.”
“The Smart OR is the operating room of the future,” Thapar adds. “It is a quantum leap forward in the way surgery is performed. It’s ‘smart’ technology – it’s ‘smart’ care.”

A far cry from PGH’s ORs. Dare I dream that the LCB might hold one of these someday?

Oh my, an intra-op MRI? PGH doesn’t even have intra-op x-rays anymore.

Thank you, oh mnemonic fairy.
(mnemonic’s for club foot - INversion, ADduction & Equinus of the foot)

Also, CAVE. Cavus, Adductus, Varus, Equinus. This is also the order that the deformities are corrected via the Ponseti method.
I am still not over the fact that I wasn’t able to report to my consultant on that oh-so-toxic OPD day. :(

Screwed

“Is this really what you want to do for the rest of your life? You’ll never be able to say ‘I saved a life!’ All you can say is ‘I saved a limb!’”

Oddly enough, yes. Even though sometimes, even the limb cannot be saved.

s/p ICC year

I feel so old reading and hearing about everyone’s first official day as ICCs. Everyone’s so excited, thinking they’ll be able to do so much in the coming months. Buying stash from Bambang, practicing venipunctures on each other, and basically excited for everything they’re gonna learn from inside the hospital. They probably won’t believe me when I say that most of the learning during ICC year, I did outside the confines of the hospital, both academically and non-academically; reading from books (not transes), while having a quarter-life crisis in the midst of all the free time ICCs are known to have.

You should be known by the character you leave behind; that will be your legacy.

Dr. Joel Elises, Mu Sigma Phi ‘77

Sometimes I wonder if I will ever be as wise as some of the teachers that we encounter.

UPCAT Results are out

All I remember from my UPCAT were the Tagalog comic strip and the survey at the end asking if I thought the exam was easy. Feels like sooooooo long ago.

Noynoy just signed the 2011 budget. I don’t think he realized that by cutting the budget of education, he effectively cut the budget of the largest tertiary hospital in the country. :|

RH advocate Carlos Celdran arrested for protesting inside church - Nation - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

griaaa:

I find it unfair that Carlos Celdran got arrested for “offending religious feelings” while the Catholic Church, because of its staunch opposition to the RH Bill, robs people of their human rights (right to information, health, etc.), in addition to some of their priests who continue to abuse children and women. I believe that God is wise and knows who should burn forever in hell.

Ugh.

The Noynoy Administration promises to achieve Universal Healthcare in 3 years or less

I don’t know if that’s even feasible. Big dreams, big promises, but I hear nothing about how he’s going to achieve any of it, except for “kalabanin ang korupsyon”. Nothing is concrete.

The brachial plexus, again. My mind always goes back to that demo by Dr. Bundoc during dissection, hehe.
